ABC OF BREASTFEEDING.

From the first moment the infant is applied to the breast, it must be nursed upon a certain plan. This is necessary to the well-doing of the child, and will contribute essentially to preserve the health of the parent, who will thus be rendered a good nurse, and her duty at the same time will become a pleasure. This implies, however, a careful attention on the part of the mother to her own health; for that of her child is essentially dependent upon it. Healthy, nourishing, and digestible milk can be procured only from a healthy parent; and it is against common sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, nevertheless, provide as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her child, as if she were diligently attentive to these important points. Every instance of indisposition in the nurse is liable to affect the infant. And this leads me to observe, that it is a common mistake to suppose that, because a woman is nursing, she ought therefore to live very fully, and to add an allowance of wine, porter, or other fermented liquor, to her usual diet. The only result of this plan is, to cause an unnatural degree of fulness in the system, which places the nurse on the brink of disease, and which of itself frequently puts a stop to the secretion of the milk, instead of increasing it. The right plan of proceeding is plain enough; only let attention be paid to the ordinary laws of health, and the mother, if she have a sound constitution, will make a better nurse than by any foolish deviation founded on ignorance and caprice. The following case proves the correctness of this statement: A young lady, confined with her first child, left the lying-in room at the expiration of the third week, a good nurse, and in perfect health. She had had some slight trouble with her nipples, but this was soon overcome. The porter system was now commenced, and from a pint to a pint and a half of this beverage was taken in the four and twenty hours. This was resorted to, not because there was any deficiency in the supply of milk, for it was ample, and the infant thriving upon it; but because, having become a nurse, she was told that it was usual and necessary, and that without it her milk and strength would ere long fail. After this plan had been followed for a few days, the mother became drowsy and disposed to sleep in the daytime; and headach, thirst, a hot skin, in fact, fever supervened; the milk diminished in quantity, and, for the first time, the stomach and bowels of the infant became disordered. The porter was ordered to be left off; remedial measures were prescribed; and all symptoms, both in parent and child, were after a while removed, and health restored. Having been accustomed, prior to becoming a mother, to take a glass or two of wine, and occasionally a tumbler of table beer, she was advised to follow precisely her former dietetic plan, but with the addition of half a pint of barley-milk morning and night. Both parent and child continued in excellent health during the remaining period of suckling, and the latter did not taste artificial food until the ninth month, the parent's milk being all-sufficient for its wants. No one can doubt that the porter was in this case the source of the mischief. The patient had gone into the lying-in-room in full health, had had a good time, and came out from her chamber (comparatively) as strong as she entered it. Her constitution had not been previously worn down by repeated child-bearing and nursing, she had an ample supply of milk, and was fully capable, therefore, of performing the duties which now devolved upon her, without resorting to any unusual stimulant or support. Her previous habits were totally at variance with the plan which was adopted; her system became too full, disease was produced, and the result experienced was nothing more than what might be expected. The plan to be followed for the first six months. Until the breast- milk is fully established, which may not be until the second or third day subsequent to delivery (almost invariably so in a first confinement), the infant must be fed upon a little thin gruel, or upon one third water and two thirds milk, sweetened with loaf sugar. After this time it must obtain its nourishment from the breast alone, and for a week or ten days the appetite of the infant must be the mother's guide, as to the frequency in offering the breast. The stomach at birth is feeble, and as yet unaccustomed to food; its wants, therefore, are easily satisfied, but they are frequently renewed. An interval, however, sufficient for digesting the little swallowed, is obtained before the appetite again revives, and a fresh supply is demanded. At the expiration of a week or so it is essentially necessary, and with some children this may be done with safety from the first day of suckling, to nurse the infant at regular intervals of three or four hours, day and night. This allows sufficient time for each meal to be digested, and tends to keep the bowels of the child in order. Such regularity, moreover, will do much to obviate fretfulness, and that constant cry, which seems as if it could be allayed only by constantly putting the child to the breast. A young mother very frequently runs into a serious error in this particular, considering every expression of uneasiness as an indication of appetite, and whenever the infant cries offering it the breast, although ten minutes may not have elapsed since its last meal. This is an injurious and even dangerous practice, for, by overloading the stomach, the food remains undigested, the child's bowels are always out of order, it soon becomes restless and feverish, and is, perhaps, eventually lost; when, by simply attending to the above rules of nursing, the infant might have become healthy and vigorous. For the same reason, the infant that sleeps with its parent must not be allowed to have the nipple remaining in its mouth all night. If nursed as suggested, it will be found to awaken, as the hour for its meal approaches, with great regularity. In reference to night-nursing, I would suggest suckling the babe as late as ten o'clock p. m., and not putting it to the breast again until five o'clock the next morning. Many mothers have adopted this hint, with great advantage to their own health, and without the slightest detriment to that of the child. With the latter it soon becomes a habit; to induce it, however, it must be taught early. The foregoing plan, and without variation, must be pursued to the sixth month. After the sixth month to the time of weaning, if the parent has a large supply of good and nourishing milk, and her child is healthy and evidently flourishing upon it, no change in its diet ought to be made. If otherwise, however, (and this will but too frequently be the case, even before the sixth month) the child may be fed twice in the course of the day, and that kind of food chosen which, after a little trial, is found to agree best.

Treating ED with respect to its causes

Male impotence or, as the doctors call it, erectile dysfunction (ED) is a constant or periodical inability to obtain or maintain an erection strong enough for having sexual intercourse. And as the overall satisfaction with sexual life is a very important aspect of an individual's wellbeing, seeing the rise in erectile dysfunction and female sexual problems within the aging population becomes disturbing. That's why the question of successfully treating erectile dysfunction becomes more and more relevant for a constantly growing group of people, bringing satisfaction and preventing from psychological problems from taking place in case it helps.

Erectile dysfunction is of course a male problem, but it also involves the activity of the partner, who should support the man and give him all the love and care to make the treatment really effective. Erection starts first and foremost in the brain, and making your man feel relaxed, loved and wanted is the best thing you can give him if there are any problems with erection. Don't expect the erection to occur on its own - even with strong ED medications erection won't take place if there's no sexual stimulation. So you'll have to get in touch with the most erotic part of a man's body - his brain - and make sure the signals are all good and working.

Erection involves three stages, each of them involving a different system in the body. And if there's anything wrong with just any element on any of these stages, it is likely that the erection will not be as good as might want it to be, if there will be any at all. So make sure everything is right during the following stages:

Sexual arousal. Occurring in the brain, it is usually caused by sensory experience or by plain thoughts of sexual content.

Response of the nervous system. Aroused brain sends signals to the corresponding areas of the body through the means of the nervous system.

Blood circulation increase. This way more blood enters the cavernous bodies in the penile shaft, which results in a strong and durable erection.

Having such a complex mechanism, no wonder that sometimes erection comes out not as you wish it to be. Problems at any of the above mentioned stages mean that there will be problems with erection. The most typical causes for erectile dysfunction are those that have to do with nervous response and blood circulation.

Nervous system response can be affected by a variety of psychological reasons such as anxiety, stress, depression, mental disorders, relationship problems and so on, and by eliminating these conditions you are likely to improve the quality of your erection.

Blood circulation is affected by another set of conditions such as diabetes, high or low blood pressure, heart diseases, high cholesterol levels, surgical operations, penis shape deformation and many others. In many cases blood circulation problems can be eliminated by drugs such as Levitra. Levitra and other highly popularized erectile dysfunction medications work exactly by increasing the blood flow into the penile area. So if you're sure that your impotence is caused by blood circulation problems you can easily order Levitra online and rest assured that it will help you.

Sometimes the common sense answer is the best for erectile dysfunction

Scientists have developed a number of myths about themselves. They are, in one sense, the new priesthood, expected to bring us new technologies to make our lives simpler, easier and safer. They work away in these laboratories with complicated pieces of equipment lying around. They wear these spotlessly white coats that would show even the slightest stain, were they to be splashed with chemicals from one of their bubbling retorts. They are the new elite who deliver the goods to the front office where ageing managers sign off on advertizing campaigns to sell the latest gadgets and earn their commissions and bonuses. So we grow used to seeing the latest scientific journals full of the reports from these superbeings. They are couched in strange and incomprehensible jargon, accessible only by fellow scientists and other godlike beings. So it comes as something of a shock to see something written in a blunt, no-nonsense style. How can we take this as a serious piece of research when it is so easy to understand what it means?

Well, in this instance, there have been several years of work involved. The scientists started out with a complex hypothesis. They devised different methods for testing the various possible theories. Work began. Data were collected and numbers crunched. Slowly, a pattern emerged in the results. It was a revelation. Used by countless generations, the traditional idiom was proved by the scientific method. "Use it or lose it" was the right answer! Back to the beginning. One of the more obvious facts of life is that, as men age, they become more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. A number of different explanations have been offered for this starting with the simple truth that they grow tired and have less energy, to more complicated explanations about the build-up of plaque on the lining of arterial walls.

Now we have this new piece of research. One of the features of ageing is that the opportunity for sexual activity can decline. Couples grow old and get out of the habit. One partner can die leaving the other alone and reluctant to re-enter the dating game. Whatever the reason, some men can go some years without sexual intercourse. It seems that the muscles lose their tone when not used, that the soft spongy tissue inside the penis breaks down and is no longer able to hold as much blood to form the erection. Combined with the tendency of the arterial walls to harden with age and so lose their ability to dilate, and you have a classic recipe for erectile dysfunction. That's before we get to all the psychological problems of performance anxiety likely to affect some men as they approach the possibility of restarting sexual activity.

The evidence from this new research is clear. Men who continue to have regular sex are significantly less likely to suffer erectile dysfunction. Their self-confidence is strong and their bodies still in training. For men who are ageing and with some history of inactivity, the best way forward is by using cialis. Taken as needed about thirty minutes before expected sexual activity, this can boost performance and restore confidence. If there is some embarrassment about the prospect of asking a doctor for a prescription, you can now buy cialis online without the need for a prescription. Your privacy is respected, your reputation safe.

Chemicals and impotence

One of the better short stories dealing with alien invasions is The Screwfly Solution, written under a pseudonym by Alice Sheldon. It assumes aliens would find it too much trouble to use military force to wipe us off the face of the Earth. They would prefer to let us die out. Curiously, this builds on and anticipates many of our own uses of chemicals that induce impotence or infertility. Without any help from aliens, humans are doing their best to reduce their own numbers. One of the most common of the modern chemicals is Bisphenol A (BPA) which is used to harden plastic products and make epoxy resin. You will find it in hundreds of different types of container used to store or carry food. It's also used to coat the inside of drinks cans and to harden the plastics used in the manufacture of sports equipment, cars and some medical devices. In other words, it's hard to avoid eating food stored in it and touching things made with it.

There's now a small mountain of evidence out of China that workers exposed to high levels of BPA suffer loss of libido, erectile dysfunction and impotence. This adds to all the other evidence of health problems now being considered by the FDA including behavioural changes, early onset of puberty in girls, obesity and cancer. Next year, it's due to announce whether the use of BPA is to be limited in the US. The FDA already accepts that babies and children are potentially most at risk - a fact disputed by the manufacturers. Indeed, in many countries, baby bottles made with BPA have been banned. This latest evidence out of China is clear evidence of reproductive problems in adults. But, before panicking, we need to see the Chinese evidence in context. All these workers were exposed to significantly higher levels of BPA than would be encountered in the real world. No matter how many cans of soda and beer you drank, you would not consume the same amount of BPA. Nevertheless, BPA does leach into food and drink from its packaging. In November, Consumer Reports published the result of tests showing BPA in the majority of the brand-name canned foods on sale in US stores. This included juice, soups, vegetables and fish. According to industry experts, the evidence to date is no more than suggestive of a link between BPA and impotence. We will have to wait for the FDA to complete its review for the government's view.

Until then, men should seriously consider avoiding the use of anything made with BPA, and stop eating and drinking out of cans. You should consider switching to bottled beer. This is the precautionary principle. You avoid the potential danger until you have clear evidence it is safe. Once you have reduced your intake of BPA, this should reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction. If you do have problems, use cialis - now the leading brand in many countries. This comes in two different versions. One giving you thirty-six hours of sexual response, taken as needed. The other taken once-daily gives response round the clock. There is no better drug on the market for giving completely natural and hard erections whenever you are sexually stimulated. Buy cialis and find out why it has become the top brand.

Troubleshooting your sex life

When erection problems come your way, most men usually search in panic for the most effective medication that will help them get the spark back. But not that many think of the causes behind erectile dysfunction and try to dig out the root of the problem. Too bad, because this is just the right way to avoid erection problems altogether and make them milder even if they come. Erection problems are often caused by the overall state of your health and body, and if you want to enjoy a good sexual life for a longer time, here are some things you have to think about doing:

First step: exercise is important

Numerous studies indicate that exercising is directly related to the likelihood of developing impotence at a certain point. Men, who burn more than 200 calories daily by exercising are know to be less prone to erectile dysfunction and their testosterone levels are usually higher then in men who don't exercise. However, there is a word of caution towards those who prefer to use biking as their exercise of choice - men riding bikes are twice as likely to have erection problems as other men. Doctors link this finding with the usual block and tension in the penile area, while riding bikes (both on road and in the gym), which affects blood circulation.

Second step: forget about bad habits and fatty meals

Erection strongly depends on the state of arteries in the penis, as a normal blood circulation will result in a good and stable erection. But with age, men tend to suffer from various blood vessel conditions, the most frequent of which is atherosclerosis. You may not notice it until you are will into your 50's, as it will gradually affect the vessels in your entire body, not only those next to your heart. And that means that the blood circulation in the penile area is likely to be affected by the condition. That's why preventing conditions such as atherosclerosis means you're also preventing erection problems. Here are some things you should do to make sure you are less prone to blood vessel problems:

  • Eat less fatty meals

  • Shed off those extra pounds

  • Quit smoking

Of all things, smoking is probably the most negative factor influencing erection problems. So remember that each cigarette smoked makes your impotence closer and more evident.

Third step: analyze the drugs you are taking

Erection problems can be caused by certain drugs you are currently taking. So make sure to consult with your physician, especially if you are currently taking any of the following groups of drugs:

  • Antidepressants

  • Hypertension treatments

  • Psychosis or anxiety pills

  • Heartburn medications

  • Prostate disease drugs

  • Cholesterol regulators

Substances like alcohol, marijuana and steroids are also known to affect male sexual potency, so make sure you're not abusing the.

Fourth step: choose a treatment

With so many drugs designed for treating male impotence you will surely find what works for you. Drugs like Cialis or Levitra are known to help in the majority of cases, so if you need a little boost, you can easily buy Cialis or any other drug online - thanks to the numerous online pharmacies out there, it has never been easier to do that.

Blood issues are likely to cause ED

It is not big news that erectile dysfunction is not only psychological issue, rising from nervous problems such as depression, anxiety or stress. In fact, most cases of male impotence have different blood problems as the primary cause. Healthy state of blood vessels in your body, and in your penis particularly, is crucial for good and effective functioning of the penis. So when getting to ED treatment, having a drug that has to do with overall blood circulation and the blood flow in the penis is really important. In some cases erectile dysfunction is a side-effect of the drugs you are currently taking for other health conditions such as depression. That's why it is very important to choose the right kinds of medication and to know their side-effects.

Health conditions that are likely to cause ED

One of the most widely seen causes of erectile dysfunction is the damage to blood vessels and nervous tissue delivered by diabetes. Other medical conditions that are likely to cause erectile dysfunction include blood pressure issues, liver or kidney diseases, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, testosterone level issues and damage to blood vessels and nervous tissue during surgeries in the penile area and the spinal chord. Impotence can also be caused by chronic substance abuse such as alcoholism or street drug addiction. Some drugs you are taking currently can also cause erectile dysfunction. These medications include common treatments for depression, chest pain, insomnia, overweight and ulcer. A quick fix of such conditions is likely to improve the degree of impotence but if the condition lasted for a longer period of time it will take a lot more to overcome its effects than simply taking a pill of a drug like Cialis and hope it will solve all of your problems.

Lifestyle strongly affects sexual potency

Do you smoke often? Are you a regular at the local bar? Is your work stressful and you don't get enough sleep on a regular basis? Eliminating all of these factors can significantly improve your sexual health. Men with heavy smoking and drinking habits are more prone to developing ED than non-smokers and non-drinkers. A recent two year study with participation of overweight men who had ED has shown impressive results of lifestyle change on sexual performance. During the course of the study, the participants had to follow a low-calorie diet, exercise on a regular basis, and kick off their nasty habits. As a result, about one third of the test subjects have shown dramatic improvement of the quality of their erections without using such drugs as Cialis at all. So make sure to change your lifestyle towards a healthier one first and maybe it will help you without having to use any additional medications. It all depends on how long you have been experiencing the negative effects of nicotine, alcohol, recreational drugs and unhealthy diet. The rule of thumb here is the longer you follow such a lifestyle, the harder it will be to get back to the normal and healthy one and get significant improvements. Still, it's all possible so make sure to take that change towards a better and healthier way of living your life.

Are men and women the same when it comes to pain?

In these more modern times of sexual equality, it may not be politically correct to talk about differences between men and women. Unfortunately, the medical profession cannot ignore the increasing volume of scientific evidence that there are important differences, particularly when it comes to pain management. In this, it is important to distinguish between biological sex and gender. There are visual tests for the presence or absence of reproductive organs, and lab tests for chromosomes that help to say whether this is a man or woman. Gender, on the other hand, is a list of the social roles society defines for people. This can be complicated when people choose to act or behave in ways considered more appropriate for the opposite sex. As an example of the problem, you only have to look at the complaints that Caster Semenya is not a woman. How can this muscular person from South Africa suddenly beat the word record for the 800m by one second and be a woman?

The last decade has seen a rapid rise in the volume of research into gender differences in the response to pain. There is clear evidence that women are more likely to consult a doctor about pain and to take drugs to relieve that pain. As a result, the national statistics show more women than men suffering from the more common medical conditions causing pain such as arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, etc. In tests involving healthy volunteers, women are more likely to report higher levels of pain than men. This applies regardless of the other factors of age, race, ethnicity and religion. Interestingly, brain scans have shown that pain affects different parts of the brain. In women, the limbic area which also affects emotions is stimulated more than in men.

The speculation is that the differences in brain activity flow from early human development. Men were the stronger group with responsibility to fight to defend the community. This means being prepared to accept pain. Women were expected to respond to danger by nurturing and protecting the young, running away if necessary. Today, men remain less willing to admit to feeling pain and are reluctant to seek medical help. It does not matter whether this is a biological or gender difference, the statistical evidence for this unwillingness to seek help is absolutely clear. But, equally clear is that tramadol relieves the pain of both a macho man and an emotional woman. Even though there may be gender differences, the biological effect of tramadol is the same on a human body. It relieves moderate to severe pain. So, perhaps it is time for all men suffering in silence to overcome the cultural conditioning that threatens their self-esteem if they admit to pain. Once you have clearance from your local healthcare provider that there are no problems in you taking this drug, go online and buy tramadol from the privacy of your own home. This relieves the pain and preserves your image.
